February 21 - March 20, 2010
Lars Bohman Gallery is pleased to present Finish artist Marianna Uutinen's sixth exhibition in the gallery. The show consists of a series of new paintings. A catalogue has been produced in conjunction with the exhibition.
Marianna Uutinen gained immediate attention with her debut show in Helsinki in 1989. Finishing her studies, she evaluated her relation to painting and questioned the motif and the expression as driving forces behind her work. The way of working and the type of material were central to the creative process forming the content. She started out by simply piping paint directly onto the canvas. The result was a kind of drawn paintings, where the connotations of decorations already existed in the material. Like a ready-made these paint lines formed part of the content. Later the canvases gained a heavier structure, generous sheets of acrylic paint were allowed to float over the surface and consequently the limit between painting and sculptural installation vanished.
The new works balance between the painterly expression and the sculptural. Thin layers of acrylics have been draped over the canvases and black accents of paint dance between the cool silvery works and the strong neon pink paintings. The tempo varies in these abstract works, from powerful and sculptural to the more quiet and elegant. The artist has with this series started out with her own history, but succeeded in renewing her language with a both poetic and musical touch. Uutinen is also of current interest with her participation in Carnegie Art Award 2010.
Marianna Uutinen was born 1961 in Pieksämäki, Finland. She lives and works in Helsinki. She received her artistic education at the Finnish Art Academy 1980-85 and at Institut des Hautes Etudes en Arts Plastiques in Paris between 1991-92. In 1997 Marianna Uutinen represented Finland in the Venice Biennale. She has had numerous solo shows, among others at, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Åbo Art Museum, Finland, Galleria Figure, Turin, Italty, Living Art Museum, Reykjavik, Galerie Anhava, Helsinki, Galleri Wang, Oslo and Anders Tornberg, Lund. She has participated in many group shows; Carnegie Art Award 2010, Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, Germany, Kunsthalle Wien, Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm, Kiasma, Helsinki, Nordic Festival of Contemporary Art, Moss, Norway, Museo Michetti, Francavilla al Mare, Italy and Brandts Klaedefabrik in Odense, Denmark to mention a few.
